This is the template they should use going forward as the heroes search for the Sorcerer.
Regina, Emma, and Rumplestiltskin nudged the villainesses aside just enough to create a happy balance of visiting guest characters with names the audience responds to and the Storybrooke regulars. Actually, they were somewhat underwhelming - especially in Ursula's case. After Frozen, the Queens of Darkness threatened to take center stage, but happily, they shared the spotlight. We got snippets here and there with Robin and Regina and Rumplestiltskin's struggle, but characters like Charming and Snow suffered from being sidelined. Solving the Snow Queen dilemma also took too much of the focus off the primary cast. Because it did, some of the episodes felt like fillers - and not the kind of fillers that leave you full. The Frozen story, like Neverland and the Wicked Witch plots before it, didn't need to go for a full half season. However, they grasped onto the icy plot for too long.
Georgina Haig and especially Elizabeth Lail were charming live-action versions of the royal sisters, and Elizabeth Mitchell mastered the role of the quietly deranged Ingrid. The arrival of Elsa and Anna was undeniably fun and had a positive effect on ratings because Frozen fever is a powerful phenomenon.

Once Upon a Time succeeded and faltered in the same area over the course of 22 episodes, and it was a continuation of an issue they had in Season 3: Theming! Not themes as in good vs. Without rehashing every single scene, let's discuss the high and low points of the season. New connections were made, for better or worse, and revelations about the past provided greater insight to characters in the present. The world of Storybrooke and the Enchanted Forest expanded with the introduction of new characters and the return of familiar faces like August and Ariel. Season 4 of Once Upon a Time took the characters on quite a ride between Frozen connections, the Queens of Darkness, and the Author. Warning: Full spoilers for Season 4 of Once Upon a Time follow.
